Tankless Water Heaters: What the Trade-Off Actually Is

Longer life and no standby loss, against a real installation difference that quotes often gloss over.

Answer first

Tankless units last longer and waste no standby heat, but they are not a drop-in replacement. Gas models usually need a larger gas line and a different vent, and electric ones need substantial electrical capacity. DOE publishes the comparison.

HeaterRelay is a referral service, not a contractor. We connect homeowners with independent contractors. Contractors are required to hold whatever credential their state or municipality demands. Every state page sets out who licenses plumbers there and where to check, so you can confirm before work begins. We carry out no work, we sell no equipment, we do not set prices, and we never charge homeowners anything — the contractors in our network pay us when we route them a call.
1

How it differs

A storage heater keeps a tank hot around the clock and loses heat from it continuously. A tankless unit heats water only while it is flowing, which removes that standby loss entirely. DOE describes them as demand-type or instantaneous heaters for exactly that reason.

2

The lifespan difference is real

DOE gives about 20 years for a tankless unit against 10 to 15 for a storage tank. Nothing sits full of hot water corroding, which is most of why.

3

What the quote has to cover

A tankless unit is not a like-for-like swap. Gas models generally need a larger gas supply and a different vent; electric models can need substantial electrical capacity. A quote that does not mention either is not a complete quote.

4

And hard water still matters

Scale collects on a tankless heat exchanger as readily as in a tank, and the exchanger is the expensive part. Where the water is hard, descaling is part of owning one.

Know the fuel and the symptom? That is most of the call.Gas and electric heaters fail in almost entirely different ways, so saying which you have gets you to the right person faster. We route the call and never charge you for it. Water heaters are what we write about; the number goes further.
